My hubby keeps receiving sweepstakes in the mail from nearby car dealerships. They offer guaranteed prizes of either new cars, plasma TV's and lesser things. I have been keeping track of this kind of mail and when the first ad said that we had won a "$1500 shopping spree" I got excited. It turned out that the $1500 was in coupons toward the purchase of products on a website where the prices were so high that in reality the coupons were worth nothing because the products could have been purchased at other places for less. In other words, it was a scam. The second time around, we won two "gold coins". This time the "gold" was actually only two gold colored $1 coins. At least it was worth two dollars but still somewhat deceptive.
I don't know how car dealerships think they are going to get customers by deceptive advertising. Who would want to buy something from a dealer who obviously cons the public to come into their show room? Seems like lately the dealers have been getting a little smarter. This time the winner was a $5 gift card. The ad was not deceptive and the $5 was worth stopping in. The dealership where we bought our car was the only one that has actually given us something worth stopping for. From now on I will only keep the ads from them and throw the rest away. That is the only one that has actually made it worth while to stop by.
